Cultural Learning Through Play: Supporting Māori Whānau at Te Hononga Nohinohi

"Thank you so much for your generosity! The kids absolutely love the sensory boards. They are such a hit. It has been beautiful watching the tamariki explore and interact with them during playgroup today. They are not only fun but also really engaging for their learning and development. Everyone is so grateful for the support. Ngā mihi nui!" Kiri, Playgroup Mum and Regular Attendee

Tell us how and to whom you distributed the goods in your community

We donated a set of sensory boards to Te Hononga Nohinohi Playgroup, a Māori-led playgroup located in Hallam, Victoria. This playgroup supports Māori and Pasifika whānau with tamariki aged 0 to 4 years and is run entirely by volunteers. Parents and grandparents lead the sessions, creating a culturally grounded and welcoming space for families to connect, share, and support one another. The sensory boards were delivered directly to the playgroup’s weekly session at Hallam Gardens Children’s Centre. The tamariki engaged with them straight away, exploring the textures, locks, and interactive elements with joy and curiosity.

Tell us how these goods helped your community, program or organisation

The sensory boards were delivered today and were immediately welcomed by the group. Tamariki began engaging with them straight away, showing curiosity and excitement. These boards are already adding to the playgroup’s learning environment by encouraging fine motor skill development, sensory exploration, and independent play. We believe they will continue to support early childhood development in a fun and meaningful way, while aligning with the group’s focus on Māori cultural values and language. We are grateful to Good360 and your donation partners for helping us bring these kinds of resources to grassroots, whānau-led programs that are creating positive change in our community.
We hope to continue building relationships with cultural and community-based playgroups and centres in our region. Donations like this help us strengthen early learning, cultural identity, and whānau connection in South-East Melbourne.
