At our church’s weekly playgroup, a simple set of colourful alphabet toys has become much more than just a learning tool – it’s a symbol of connection, support, and hope for families in our community.

Every week, families from all walks of life, including many doing it tough, gather in our church hall. The playgroup is a safe and welcoming space where children can learn and grow through play, while parents and carers find a sense of belonging and emotional support. For many, this is the highlight of their week — a place where they are seen, heard, and cared for.

The alphabet toy kit has become a favourite among the children. It helps little ones develop their language and fine motor skills while sparking joy and curiosity. But beyond that, it fosters shared moments between children and their parents, many of whom are experiencing social isolation or hardship. As the children explore letters and sounds, the adults around them connect over stories, advice, and laughter — forming friendships and building a support network that extends well beyond the walls of the church.
