Hepatitis NSW is dedicated to eliminating hepatitis C as a public health threat by 2030. hepatitis C, a blood-borne virus, can cause severe liver damage, including scarring and liver failure, and potentially lead to liver cancer. Approximately 80% of those infected develop chronic infections, which can have serious long-term health consequences.
In 2016, groundbreaking treatments for hepatitis C were introduced, significantly advancing Hepatitis NSW’s mission to eradicate the virus in New South Wales. A critical component of this effort is the development of more user-friendly and effective testing methods, such as Dry Blood Spot (DBS) testing. This innovative approach allows individuals to be tested for Hepatitis C using just a few drops of blood from their fingertips, eliminating the need for intravenous needles or clinical staff. The mobility and accessibility of DBS testing make it possible to reach people in convenient locations, enhancing the likelihood of testing and treatment.
DBS testing is particularly beneficial for reaching priority populations who may have faced discrimination and are often wary of health professionals. To address this, Hepatitis NSW has employed and trained community peers, who have experienced similar stigma, to conduct the DBS tests. This peer-led approach has proven to increase community uptake of testing and treatment, fostering trust and engagement among vulnerable populations._
The DBS testing project also ensures continuity of care by maintaining contact with participants throughout their treatment journey, providing support, and promoting ongoing engagement.
