Student Self Regulation and Interoception

“I get angry sometimes and say things to people that are mean. Now when I feel angry, I take a 10 minute break, get my Interoception tray out and quietly work on my Lego. Working on my Lego build helps me calm down because I stop thinking about other things. Tell us how and to whom you distributed the goods in your community

We have a high number of students dealing which trauma and neurodiversity’s. We find that they can become very emotionally heightened and dysregulated. We are trying to work with the students to identify and select strategies that can assist them in becoming more regulated, calm and ready to learn. I gave each of our classes a few of the Lego sets to put into their ‘Calm Corners’ or ‘Interoception areas’. I also put a couple are in our Interoception Room which is accessed by students Reception to Year 6.

Tell us how these goods helped your community, program or organisation

At our school we are focusing on Self Regulation and Interoception. Interoception is the awareness of your body’s internal senses or signals. It identifies how you feel. We are working with students to develop their skills in identifying the way they are feeling. Students are accessing a range of strategies and activities that will help them to regulate and get themselves back into the zone where they are ready to learn. Students use breathing techniques, mindful colouring, tactile activities and many other ways that work for them. We have found the adding of Lego to be extremely successful for self regulation. When a student is dysregulated, they focus on their breathing, the Lego build and the instructions which distracts them from what ever it was that had them heightened. After around 10 minutes we find that the students are calm and ready to learn.
