As part of student learning, Horsham Special School has run a project to increase financial literacy and awareness of money, as well as bring to life the real maths involved in cash handling. The project involves students running an Opportunity Shop (Op Shop). The students advertise and ask for donations, set up stalls and then run the shop across the term. The big difference for our shop is that every student gets to take something home, and no actual money changes hands as every student is given an amount to ‘spend’. Many classes also provide chances to gain more Op Shop money as prizes and rewards for great work in the classroom. We also know that the donations given to the shop go out to families and students in need, as our community is quite disadvantaged. The Op Shop project supported over 100 young people living with disability, and their families, many of whom also live with financial hardship and competing priorities for the money that does come into the house. For us to be able to provide Nike clothing along with wonderful fun toys to our students has been an uplifting experience for all. To be able to do this within a learning activity for our students is an extra bonus!
