Mobile SIM Cards improve engagement

We utilised the SIM cards to assist our clients to stay engaged in our treatment program. Many of our clients do not have phones or money for credit, they may be without housing, recently released from prison or have financial hardship. We purchased unlocked phones and gave these to clients with a SIM card. *Kim said that offering phones and the SIM helped them to access the nurse and case manager for appointments. *David said that without the access to a phone and SIM he would not have been able to access the nurse to arrange an appointment or to access treatment.

Tell us how and to whom you distributed the goods in your community

We distributed the SIM cards to people accessing our services across Queensland, primarily in Townsville, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast. People receiving the SIM cards had financial hardship and no capacity to purchase ongoing credit or in most cases also did not have access to a mobile phone. Through our funded program, we purchased unlocked mobile phones that could take the SIM cards. People who registered with us needing treatment for Hepatitis C and who did not have a current phone and SIM, or who did have an unlocked phone but could benefit from a SIM were offered one. It did take us up until June to move on all the SIMS as we wanted to make sure those who needed access were able to. People accessing the SIMS were adults from our client group and as mentioned above were often just released from prison and had no means of communicating with our services. Without this offer, clients would not have been able to stay in contact with us, or even continue on engaging with our nurses and case managers on a scheduled basis, we would be relying on drop in/ walk-in visits which can be inconsistent when trying to provide health screening and health care.

Tell us how these goods helped your community, program or organisation

People who accessed the SIMS reported they were able to commence and complete treatment with us, and have been able to be linked in with other health supports such as drug and alcohol counselling or their GP. At this point in time, some people who received SIMS are still on treatment and hopeful to be cured of Hepatitis C soon. This access has been instrumental in connecting people with our health team, giving people autonomy and self-determination in their health care with our service. Overwhelmingly, our clients said that provision of phones and SIM cards helped them to engage and stay engaged, and made the difference between accessing health care and not accessing health care.
